Vape pens are increasingly becoming a popular way to medicate with and consume cannabis. The multitude of manufacturers in the market today provide a wide range of products that make vaping approachable and convenient for both the new patient and a true cannabis connoisseur. Whether you are looking for CBD or THC in sativa, indica or a hybrid we will have something for you. There are many strains to choose from in all of these catagories.
Viscous: When we talk about the “viscosity” of cannabis oils and extracts, it refers to the consistency or thickness of the substance. For example, water has very low viscosity and pours easily and quickly, unlike honey or lava, which have high viscosity and flow slowly. Depending on the viscosity of the cannabis oil within your vape cartridge, you may need to use a different power base.
Voltage: The standard unit of electrical energy applied to the cartridge from the battery base to produce more or less vapor. The higher the voltage the higher the temperature can go. If the cannabis oils you are vaporizing have a high viscosity, it will require more voltage to properly produce a cloud of vapor. Bases with simpler batteries and no buttons lack the power to vaporize thicker oils, so a stronger power base with a higher voltage would be required. Variable voltage bases allow ideal vapor cloudsfor a range of oil viscousity.
“Pull” / inhale: In this instance, “pull” refers to placing your mouth on the mouthpiece of the vape pen and drawing air in, just like pulling on a straw to drink.
Matching Cartridges to Bases
Matching a light bulb to a socket is a helpful analogy for matching a vape cartridge to a power base. When you screw a lightbulb into an electric socket, it will light up a room, but if you screw a lightbulb into a socket that’s too powerful, the bulb will burn out quickly.
Similarly, one must consider the strength of the vaporizer’s power base (as measured by battery voltage output) before screwing on a cartridge full of cannabis oil. Make to sure to match the cartridges to the correct power base by choosing the same brands for both items.
Do not mix and match branded cartridges with other different branded power bases because leaks, clogs and burnouts can occur, especially if one pairs a sensitive or simple cartridge to a powerful battery that may have been designed for oils with a higher viscosity.
Types of Power Bases
Base without Button: This power base has no button to operate it, simply attach the cartridge to the base and hit it. Suction is what activates the base.
Base with Button: This base has a button to operate it, after attaching the cartridge press and hold down the button as you hit it. The button can be used to turn the pen off, if you hit it a few times in quick succession.
Base with Button and Variable Voltage: This base has a button to operate it, after attaching the cartridge press and hold down the button as you hit it. The button can be used to turn the pen off, if you depress a few times in quick succession. The button can also change the voltage on the pen starting low and going to high by pressing it three times in succession.
Base with Button, Variable Voltage and Preheat Setting: This base has a button to operate it, after attaching the cartridge press and hold down the button as you hit it. The button can be used to turn the pen off, if you depress a few times in quick succession. The button can also change the voltage on the pen starting low and going to high by pressing it three times in succession. You can hit the button twice to activate the “preheat setting” which primes the cartridges for smoother hits.
DO wait for power base battery to die completely before recharging. This extends the life of the battery. Also remove from power after fully charging, avoid over-charging.
DO store your vape cartridges in a cool dark place.
DO NOT leave your cartridges in the sun. Do not store cannabis oil cartridges over room temperature. If the cartridge is left in a hot car, the viscosity of the oil in the cartridge will become runny, possibly causing oil to seep out of the cartridge, clogging the mouthpiece or damaging the power base.
DO store your vaporizer upright. A pen holder or cup works wonders for keeping the cannabis oil accessible for vaporizing.
DO NOT leave devices on their side for an extended amount of time. Over time, gravity will spread the surface area of the concentrate on the walls of the cartridge and that oil will never come down and vaporize, resulting in a loss.
DO unscrew the cartridge from the power base when not in use or when traveling. Leaving your cartridge attached to the power base while in a pocket or bag can result in breakage, resulting in a ruined cartridge and a sticky mess all over the power base (and your purse or pocket!). Don’t forget to turn the base off after use.
DO NOT over-tighten cartridge when screwing onto base.
Quick Start Guide
- Make sure the battery is fully charged before use. Some bases arrive fully charged, some do not.
- Remove the cartridge from its packaging. Be sure the thread is visible and the bottom of the cartridge is clean with no leaks.
- Screw the cartridge onto the power base.
- Depending on the design of the base, begin inhaling. If there is no button on the power base, the pen will be automatically activated when you inhale. If there is a button, press it five times to make sure it is on and then press the button as you inhale. Notice if there is a light on, signaling that the power base is operating.
- Start with the lowest heat and inhale slowly and steadily. This will provide you with a smooth first hit. Be mindful of how long you activate the power base. Most bases will blink when the device is too warm and automatically shut off.
