Why Athletes are Turning to CBD for Post-Workout Recovery

Bring your fitness routine to the next level by using CBD to help your body bounce back quickly after rigorous workouts. As a part of the cannabis plant, cannabidiol—also known as CBD—has several beneficial effects without the high. There are hundreds of different cannabinoids within the plant, most notably THC, which does make you feel high. While THC and CBD are the best known and studied cannabinoids, others include CBN, which is sedative, and THCV, which prevents “the munchies.”

Increasingly, athletes are integrating CBD into their routines due to its potent anti-inflammatory qualities. Tough workouts and physically demanding activities cause microscopic damage to muscles and tissues, which manifest as stiff and sore feelings. This damage and inflammation requires the body to repair the muscles and tissue, leading to stronger muscles and a fitter body over time. However, too much inflammation leads to muscle damage and exercise-related injuries such as sprains.

Using CBD-infused tinctures, edibles, capsules and balms immediately after workouts can help soothe inflammation and promote a quicker recovery, prompting professional athletes to replace their ibuprofen with cannabidiol. Recently, there’s been a spate of press coverage detailing this new trend, with US News and World Report quoting Dr. Alan Beyer, a sports medicine doctor and executive medical director of the Hoag Orthopedic Institute in California, saying “ ‘CBD penetrates transdermally to reduce inflammation in the injured tissues.’ ” Beyer notes that overuse of NSAIDs like ibuprofen leads to kidney damage, and that CBD is free of this dangerous side effect.

Already, CBD is very popular within the elite communities of endurance runners who compete in ultramarathons, as well as long-distance cyclists and mountain bikers. Outside magazine recently explored why athletes are turning to CBD, speaking with ultrarunner Avery Collins along with cyclists Andrew Talansky and Floyd Landis, who’s actually started a CBD company in Colorado called Floyd’s of Leadville. Thanks to cannabis and CBD, Landis was able to recover from a hip replacement and kick opioid painkillers.  “It’s the only thing I use now,” Landis is quoted saying. “I try not to oversell it, because I don’t want to sound insane. But if you can stop taking other pain medications, if you have a natural solution, that’s probably the better option.”

How does CBD reduce inflammation? While there’s no hard science on CBD’s effects on post-workout recovery, anecdotal evidence abounds, and studies are currently being planned to quantify these effects. Examining the science behind CBD, Men’s Journal found that “There is some evidence that cannabis has anti-inflammatory effects in studies of cell function in ‘test tubes,’” according to J. H. Atkinson, M.D., co-director of the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research at UC San Diego. “At the cellular level, cannabinoids are thought to be potent anti-inflammatory agents because they inhibit the proliferation of certain kinds of cells important in inflammation and suppress production of molecules called cytokines, which are important signals turning on the inflammatory response.”

If you’re looking to use CBD as a post-workout recovery tool, there’s a few delivery systems that can be deployed simultaneously for best results. Immediately after a post-workout shower, rub a CBD-infused balm into your muscles, especially focusing on any trouble spots like lower back, neck and knees. Give yourself a dose of CBD by using a tincture or vape pen right after you work out, and consume a capsule or edible for relief that will take effect in two hours and last for at least four to six hours.
